If you're like my family, a trip to Disneyland in California is a very special occasion. We don't want to waste a minute of our time once we arrive in the Anaheim area, and want to be able to be inside, enjoying the theme parks as soon as possible. So, here is our hassle-free plan for arriving at the Disneyland theme park gates around an hour after the time our plane lands.
The first thing we do is to fly into the closest airport to the Disneyland Resort which is John Wayne Orange County Airport (SNA). This airport is approximately 13 miles and a 20 minute drive (depending on traffic) from Disneyland. If you keep checking far enough in advance, you can usually find a price for an airline ticket that is comparable to flying into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) which is about an hours' drive to the theme parks.
Next, we take a taxi cab from the airport to our hotel. There are always plenty of taxis waiting outside of the airport once you have picked up your luggage. If you only have carry-on luggage, this will make your wait even shorter.
Then, we have the taxi take us to our hotel. We always stay in one of the three hotels located on the Disneyland Resort property, or at one of the closest "Good Neighbor" hotels, some of which are located right across the street from the entrance to the resort. Our goal is to stay at a hotel that is within a 5 to 10 minute walk from the theme park entrances. Here are some of the closest hotels to the Disneyland Resort:
The Disneyland Hotel
Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and Spa
Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel
Best Western Park Place Inn
Ramada Inn Maingate
Tropicana Inn and Suites
Carousel Inn and Suites
Fairfield Inn Anaheim
Howard Johnson Hotel
Anaheim Camelot Inn and Suites
We check into our room and then head right over to the theme parks. (If your room isn't ready yet, the hotels will let you store your luggage in a secure area until you come back from the parks.)
To save even more time, we always buy our Disneyland theme park tickets before we arrive. We usually buy them online, although I've even seen them for sale in the gift card sections of grocery and discount stores. If you haven't bought your tickets before you arrive, sometimes you can buy them at the hotel. Otherwise you will have to buy your tickets at a separate ticket counter at the resort before proceeding to the theme park entrance.
Lastly, we have all of the zippers and pockets open on any bags we are carrying into the parks before we get to the security stations. Everyone has to go through security before proceeding on to the entrance gates of the theme parks.
Now we're ready to enjoy the start of our Disneyland vacation! See how easy it can be?
